Harry James Manning was born on March 17th, 1890 in Ovington, Norfolk ( Wayland Q2-1890 4B:260) son of Henry and Annie MANNING (née ? ).
1891 census...Aged 1, he was in Elveden with his father Henry MANNING [30] farm labourer born in Icklingham; his mother Annie [28] born in Worlington; sister Mabel E [4] and brother George [2] both born in Ovington. On 19th March 1894, living at Lower Farm, Elveden he was admitted to Elveden Voluntary Aided Primary School. 1901 census...Aged 11, he was at Chalk Hall Farm, Elveden with his parents (father now farm foreman), sister Mabel and brothers George and Edgar [7] born Elveden. 1911 census...Aged 21, a carpenter,he was at Blankney, Lincolnshire, boarding with George and Annie REVILL. His parents and brother Edgar (Engineer's clerk) were still at Chalk Hill Farm, Elveden. Their address was later at "Summerpit", Elveden. Part legatee was Miss Lizzie HOLVEY. |

He enlisted in Metheringham, Lincolnshire.
His Army service record has not been found so where or exactly when he was wounded is not known. Bailleul was an important railhead and centre for many Casualty Clearing Stations. At the end of October his battalion were in Belgium , near the border.
